In 1995, the London Borough of Barking and Dagenham commissioned
Sandy Elliot to run eight workshops in secondary schools based on techniques and mythology which Sandy explained. Pupils in year ten, in both Art and Technology departments produced an astonishing range of both 2 and
3-dimensional work.
The workshops were so successful that we set up a much more ambitious project in 1997. This time a total of 35 schools were involved over a period of 42 days. The project involved both primary school pupils in year five (age 9) and secondary pupils in year ten (age 14-15).
The primary pupils produced paintings based on stories which Sandy told them. Secondary pupils in both art and design and technology departments produced sketchbook ideas, then a final painting based on stories, myths and techniques explained as part of the workshop. The design and technology departments used the experience as inspiration for products such as jewellery, textiles, clocks and graphic products.
Overall, the project produced around a thousand paintings, some of which are displayed as part of this Internet exhibition.
