| The Big Band - Transcript We open up showing an out of focus door from a distance, the door opens and towards camera we see a black musician drop down his bag on to the deserted, slightly dusty, wooden dance floor. He sits down on a solitary chair, pulls out a harmonica and places it to his lips. The harmonica player is alone and the place looks large around him, he sways slightly as he begins a very slow 12-bar blues pattern. A caption appears over a freeze-frame “Albert – from Jamaica ). As we see Albert from an alternative angle, a host of other musicians and dancers have joined him, there are too many to take in at once, and so we visit some of them. Each musician has brought an instrument from their own culture, and they all culminate in a rich musical experience. The air is thick with sound, which is helped along by some more unusual instruments. We have some African rhythm instruments, some oriental and Asian strings, and some Eastern European melody pieces, which we may not have seen before. There are two kids outside peering through the window. As we reach the musical climax we have a lively scene that seems to feature every type of instrument from every part of the world including all the more familiar blues ingredients. We return to the original harmonica player, he is smiling an infectious smile – he is in his element, dancing, he is an older man, but his actions are of a twenty-year-old pop star. By now we have seen the origin of a huge amount of instruments, dancers and players, they are from al over the world. But the final wide shot of the whole band gives the caption: “Now all living in East London , England ”. The original man turns to camera and laughs, as the 12 bar plays out. Caption: “Let's celebrate Diversity!” |
