1. Why was the stevedore regarded as the most skilled worker in the docks?

2. Look carefully at Picture B.

a. To the right is an outline sketch of Picture B which has a number of points marked on it. Explain what is going on at Points 1-8, e.g. at Point 1 a man is lowering goods into the hold of the ship.

b. Who do you think the people at Points 9 and 10 might be? Give reasons for your answer.

c. Why was work in the hold and on the deck dangerous? Suggest at least five danger points that you can see in the picture.

3. Why was it important to work with a gang of men whom you could trust and depend on?

4. What was the contract system and why did many dockers dislike it so much?
