How does the LACHES Volunteer Mentor Team programme work?
Young people may be referred or self-referred to the Project but are always willing participants. The Team Coordinators will have an initial meeting with the young person to explain what to expect from their Mentor and the Project.
The Coordinator will match the young person and Mentor, taking into account the child's needs, circumstances and interests and will arrange and attend an introductory meeting between them. The mentoring relationship will then begin.
Mentoring meetings will be at a time and duration which suits the relationship and which fits in with the availability of the Mentor and the needs of the young person. This could be once a week for half an hour to an hour.
The mentoring relationship may last for a set period of time or be ongoing for as long as is appropriate, always being aware of not creating a co-dependency. We do ask our Volunteer Mentors to commit to a minimum period of a year with the Team.
Periodic reviews of the relationship are done and the Mentor receives ongoing support with training, self development opportunities and regular supervision.
