Volunteer Mentor Job Description

Designation: Volunteer Mentor to children and young people who are looked after by the London Borough of Barking & Dagenham

Reports to: Volunteer Mentor Coordinator

Division: Children Social Services

Purpose of the job:

To provide support and assistance to the children and young people (Mentees), who are looked after by London Borough of Barking & Dagenham. Help them to develop their personal identity, skills, knowledge and abilities. Enabling them to remain or become re-engaged in education, training or employment to improve their life chances.

General

Celebrate and assist the Mentee to celebrate their achievements.
Meet the Mentee and actively develop a supportive professional relationship with them.
Provide basic information and guidance about relevant issues such as, housing, training, employment and relationship issues. Enable the Mentee to access appropriate professional support provided by other agencies and ensure the Mentee knows about additional support available to the and how to utilise it.
Keep abreast of current issues.
Maintain records appropriately and make it available when required.
Give practical help to the Mentee.
Provide guidance to the Mentee on how they can best use the mentoring relationship.
Make the necessary practical arrangements for meeting the Mentee.
Attend and participate fully in volunteer supervision and training sessions.
Follow relevant policies and procedures as laid down by the Project in the delivery of the role of Volunteer Mentor.
