What are Out of School Hours Learning Activities?

A National Framework for Study Support - DfES

Out of School Hours Learning describes programmes of learning activities that take place outside normal school hours and which are linked to individual schools; educational provision and development aims.

Activities can take place before school, during lunchtime and after school. There are many and varied activities ranging from sports, arts, chess, drama and dance clubs to exploring the internet, food and safety, first aid, local history projects, school newsletter production, book and story telling, ICT clubs and science projects.

Local community groups whose expertise can be bought in each term can also provide activities. Resources for breakfast and homework clubs can also be funded.

The objective of the Out of School Hours Learning (Study Support) Programme is to:

• Provide learning activities that encourage and motivate pupils, fostering a positive attitude to learning.
  
• Build self-esteem, improve social skills and help students to attain higher standards of achievement.
  
• Provide opportunities for children to learn new skills and increase their self-confidence; to enjoy learning and have fun in a more informal atmosphere than that provided in the classroom, enabling children to build positive and social relationships.
  
• Encourage innovation and diversity in Out of School Hours Learning (Study Support) activities.
