New Opportunities Fund
What is the New Opportunities Fund? (NOF)
The New Opportunities Fund (NOF) is
a Lottery distribution organisation created by the National
Lottery Act 1998. It is a U.K. wide fund sponsored by the Department
for Culture, Media and Sport and is responsible for distributing
grants for health, education and environmental projects.
The funding cycle runs over five years with each individual
school receiving funding for three years.
Key Objectives of the New Opportunities Fund
What will NOF fund?
NOF will only fund activities that are new, have previously
run as a pilot, or extend the numbers of pupils participating.
For example, NOF will fund the introduction of resources for
a new breakfast or homework club, together with any existing
club that increases pupil attendance.
NOF can be allocated for payment of direct teaching (teachers
and specialist tutors) together with other organisations providing
educational activities or projects. Funding can be used for
'buying in' services from a local museum, who could provide
a six week local history project or a dance instructor to
provide workshop sessions.
Funding can also be used for activity weekends, but these
must be connected to an out of school hours club i.e. an environment
club could be rewarded with a weekend spent at a forest adventure
camp.
Money can be used for 'consumables' including pens, paper,
clay, sewing materials, cartridges and footballs but cannot
be used for capital expenditure such as goal posts which,
because life expectancy is over a year, are classed as capital.
Similarly, NOF will not pay for computers or for parents'
participation in activities.
