The Catch

A gateway public artwork for Barking town centre

Fabricators

Alloy Fabweld Ltd built the artwork in their Essex workshop.

The net has been made from aluminum which they rolled by hand.

The main structure is mild steel. Its curve had to be rolled by specialists in Scotland and Germany. The fish were the main challenge however. Their design was based on a wood and leather children's toy from China, supplied by the architect, and needed to be translated into appropriate materials.

The fish for The Catch have been finally moulded in resin, sliced into segments, and sandwiched with thick rubber that allows them to bend with a fish-like movement.

They are pinned to the net with rods and move in the wind.
